Inventory Every Single Agent
You can’t protect what you don’t know exists.
Discovery is where you start. You have to find all of the AI agents, service accounts, API keys, and tokens running in your environment. Seems simple, right… Most companies are botching this basic step though.
In a new report, 22.5% of organizations reported having no formal catalog of agents. An additional 25% of organizations maintain their catalog in spreadsheets.
Spreadsheets. For AI agents. That’s like tracking self-driving cars with a notebook.
Your inventory should include:
- Where the agent runs
- What credentials it uses
- What systems it can access
- Who owns it (the human responsible)
If you can’t answer those four questions for every agent, you have a problem.
Log Every Action The Agent Takes
Once you know what agents exist, you need to log what they do.
This is more than capturing API calls. You want the full context:
- What prompt triggered the action
- What tools the agent used
- What data it accessed
- What output it produced
This level of logging is what takes a hobby project and makes it a production system. And it also provides your security people something to work with when bad things happen.
Detect Abnormal Behaviour In Real Time
Logs are only useful if someone is watching them.

Rotate and Retire Credentials
AI agent credentials should expire. Period.
Long lived tokens are a gift to the attacker. A token from 2022 working in 2026 is three years of risk sitting there.
Rotate every token automatically. When retiring an agent, immediately revoke its credentials. Don’t allow zombie agents to linger.
How To Keep Your Agents Accountable
Observability shows you what happened. Accountability ensures there’s a human to blame when it breaks.
Every agent needs an owner.
The owner approves what the agent is allowed to do and is paged if it misbehaves. An agent without an owner is another orphan account that is just contributing to the chaos.
Here’s the recommended workflow:
- Tag every agent with an owner in your inventory
- Require approval for any new permissions
- Review agent activity monthly
- Remove agents the moment they’re not needed
This sounds boring. It is boring. But boring security is what stops breaches.
One more thing. Document and publish your agent policies. There should be explicit and posted policies as to what agents are permitted to do and not do. This list of policies should be on the on-boarding process for all AI projects.
