What Each Format Actually Is
MP3 is an audio format. Adobe’s rundown of common media formats describes it as MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, an audio-only container built to compress sound into something small and portable.
MP4 is not really a format in the same sense. It is a wrapper. Adobe’s explainer on MP4 files calls it a multimedia container, capable of carrying video, audio, still images and subtitles inside one file.
So an MP4 already has audio inside it. An MP3 has no video inside it and never will. That asymmetry drives everything else.
Choose MP3 When You Want the Sound
- You want the track for a playlist, a workout or a drive.
- You need audio to drop under your own footage.
- You are making a ringtone or an alarm.
- You want a voiceover or a clip of somebody speaking, without the picture.
- Storage is tight and you have no interest in the visuals.

Choose MP4 When the Picture Matters
- You are keeping the clip to watch again.
- You want to study how a video was shot or edited.
- It is going into a presentation, an edit or a reference folder.

You can extract audio from a video. You cannot extract video from audio.

If You Already Have the MP4
Say you took the video and now you want just the sound. You do not need to go back to TikTok for it.
- Phone. Most video editing apps let you detach the audio and export it on its own.
- Computer. Any free editor or converter will strip the audio out of an MP4 in under a minute.
- Editing software. Drop the MP4 on a timeline, mute or delete the video track and export audio only.
Nothing is lost doing it this way. The audio inside an MP4 is the same audio a music downloader would have handed you in the first place.
It works in exactly one direction though. An MP3 cannot be turned back into the original video, because the picture was never in the file. The only way to get it is another download from the post, assuming the post is still there.
